Theory & Driving Test
The theory test consists of two elements
1,The first element consists of 50 multiple choice questions covering the Highway Code and general road safety. This section is designed to test your understanding of the theory behind driving.
2,The second element is the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) and is designed to test your awareness of potential hazards whilst driving.
Training for the driving theory test
There are many books available to help you prepare for your theory test. You will need to have a knowledge of The Highway Code and understand the principles of road safety. We provide you with theory test training using home study to give you more time for your driving lessons and you will be provided with our comprehensive Theory Test CD.
Not being prepared is the most common reason for failing the theory test, so don’t rush, only apply when you are ready.
What happens after the theory test?
On completion of the test you will receive your results immediately. If you have failed don’t give up, go back to your books and try again. Once you have passed the theory test, your instructor will advise when you reach the required standard to apply for the practical test. Remember; don’t apply until you are ready. This way you should only need one test, and this will save you money.
How do I apply for the theory test?
You can complete an application form (TT26) and send it with your fee to the Driving Standards Agency, or you can make a telephone booking with a credit card on 0300 200 1122. Application forms are available from either your local test centre or from your driving instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Pupils Are Saying
I had Tim as my instructor and I passed first time . He’s calm and very patient.

When I first started looking into driving lessons, I walked straight to NA DVLA test center 'cause it was only round then corner and asked about intensive courses. Dan, from first gear happened to be there, approached me and talked me through everything I needed to do.
Although lessons did not continue with Dan due to complications, I don't think I could have asked for a better instructor starting out as a learner. Great character and definitely knows what he's doing.

When i first called 1st Gear School of Motoring they were very helpful and put me at ease straight away. My lessons were with an instructor called Graham Woodcock and i would recommend him to anyone for driving lessons.
I passed 2nd time but that was my fault. A great driving school Graham was always on time and never cancelled any of my lessons. Cheers Graham. See you on the road mate.

Brilliant! A large family means more than one driving lesson trauma for the brood so what a relief when we finally chose the right tuition and chose a driving School that demonstrated a friendly professionalism that surpassed all previous experiences. Well done First Gear... will definitely be sending the grand children your way soon!
-Robert Jack
I was recommended 1st Gear by a friend and I would recommend them too. The lessons went very well and I learnt to drive quickly. The instructor was a good laugh and good at his job. I live in Torquay but I know they have instructors all over Torbay and Exeter.
